Le Havre, France
10 - 14 November 2009
The 2009 Model ASEM Conference in Le Havre, France, was aimed at high school and undergraduate students from Europe & Asia and was co-organized by Sciences Po-Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and the ASEF University Alumni Network. The theme of the 2009 Model ASEM conference was Europe and Asia: Where Will They Meet? The conference focused on the issue of sustainability with three topics of discussion, one within each of the three pillars. The discussion topics were:
- Political Pillar: How should we deal with security issues linked to natural resource distribution, disparities and shortages?
- Economic Pillar: How can green technologies contribute to economic growth and help fulfill the global right to development?
- Cultural Pillar: How to find a harmony between tradition and modernization in a globalizing world?
The meeting gathered nearly 60 students from all around Europe and Asia with over 15 different nationalities represented. The participants, representing very rich and diverse academic and cultural traditions, drafted a Final Chairman’s Statement together over the course of five days of debating and lobbying. The final statement elaborates the facts and definitions gathered during the conference while also offering clear initiatives on various issues – acting as a true voice of the ASEM youth!
